The Basilica is dedicated to the most important Apostle - Peter, and it was created over Peter’s grave, on the place of an ancient cemetery. The Basilica is also the only Christian temple, that witnessed the most important events in the history of the world. Over the years it was created by the most prominent architects and artist, like Donato Bramante, Raphael Santi and Michelangelo. The basilica’s dome is one of the biggest constructions o this type and is called “the tiara of the world”. It was designed by Michelangelo, it rises above the main altar and St. Peter’s tomb. The square in front of the basilica is surrounded by a magnificent colonnade, without which it is difficult to imagine this temple. Both the colonnade and the square are the works the eminent sculptor and architect: Gianlorenzo Bernini.
